I personally have been using Avast Free and still recommend it, even from the ol' XP days.

I've tried Avast, AVG, Avira, Panda after my yearly format. They are all great.

But after my latest format i've just sticked with windows defender. But don't tell anyone!
I'm a pretty safe user, So adblock+defender+firewall+ccleaner is enough for me.

But take a look over the best rated ones:

Vouch this. If you're sharp, Windows Defender works.

If you want to look at some questionable porn, probably look into AVG or something.

I've been using Avast free version for 7 years? 10 years? It's never let me down. It offers 24/7 real-time virus detection. Just remember Avast free is anti-virus only. It is not anti-malware. Things like key loggers, trojans, adware, data miners, trackers, etc can go past Avast without a sniff.

For anti-malware I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free version. But note it does not catch malware entering the system in real-time, but rather its a tool for scanning the system and removing existing malware. I think if you buy their pro version you get real-time protection, but i have never found it to be necessary. You can do a malware scan as often as you like if you're really worried about it.

I recommend getting the paid version of malwarebytes to stack with your anti virus. It's like a 1 time 20$ lifetime purchase. It offers real time protection in addition to the removal tools of the free version.
