I have a 5 year old self built computer. I upgraded the ram and gpu last night. Everything seems to work fine but my load time is abysmally slow. I get stuck at the BIOS screen and can't input any keyboard commands to enter it. It eventually gets passed this to the windows load and all is good (I think) but it takes a good 2-3 minutes.

I found a couple posts on other forums saying the issues is the 5 year old mobo with the new gpu. MoBo is a gigabyte z77x-ud3h and gfx card is a GTX 970. The error code on the mobo during start-up while stuck at bios is 62 if anyone is curious. My biggest concern is that something is more wrong than just a slow boot speed which I am not able to diagnose yet.

The solution is to flash the bios. I am running bios F7 and would flash to F18 which is the most current non beta version for the board. I'll be using qflash from a FAT32 USB. I know the risks of bricking in the mobo which would leave me in an award position of getting a new board which still supports my i7-2700 cpu.

Does anyone else have any experience with this or thoughts on if updating the bios is warranted in this instance. Both posts I saw that solved this issue were successful but a quick search of bios flash returns more horror stories than I care to deal with.

I've flashed the bios on my mobo via usb twice already and haven't had any issues. Might as well try it

MAN that mobo you have is a nightmare though. My friend just got one as a hand-me-down from his bro paired with a used gtx 960 he bought and he had all sorts of issues trying to get it to work.

never had an issue flashing.. but thats me.. every flash ive done has been fast and easy, but then again, i only run asus mobo's. they have thier stand alone flash utility built right into the bios.

flash it! then check to make sure all of the proper settings are set for nb/sb/cpu/gpu/ram .. gl :)

Yeah apparently there are some serious start up issues with this mobo and the new NVida cards. I've read everything from not even booting to getting stuck at the bios indefinitely to jusyed stalled there on boot up like me. Supposedly this goes all the way back to the 600 series cards so it's been around forever.

If your friend disconnects the gfx card and plugs the display right into the on board slots he should be fine to dl the bios and then reflash.

Thanks for the input both of you, I'll post back in a few hours if all goes well (still at work).

lmao damn, i'll tell my buddy to do that update if he hasn't already. His PC pretty much works how it is now but he has to restart it like 4 times every time he boots it to have something come up on the display.

and i'd definitely go back to windows 7 unless you're on 5GHz wireless :P
