Can anyone let me know the step by step? I am not sure I have a flash drive big enough. Can I connect the SSD and then install everything onto it while still running off my old hard drive?

Just to understand...

You have Win 7 or 8.1 installed on a hard drive, and you just got and SSD and decided to upgrade to Win 10?

/e You don't really want to upgrade from Win 7 Home Premium, to Windows 10. Win 7 Pro or Ultimate...is OK.

If you upgrade from Win 7 Home Premium...all you'll be able to upgrade to is Win 10 Basic.

/ee If you insist on Win 10 Basic, then I would just upgrade your Win 7 Home Premium, on the HDD, then you can do a clean install on the SSD...like this:

I have windows 7 home premium install on my hdd. I am getting an ssd and I want to have windows installed on it...the problem is that this was a prebuilt and I dont own a copy of windows. I head heard I can use my free upgrade to install windows 10 on my ssd but downloading the upgrade, but not installing it, then installing it onto the ssd or something.

See the bold, above.

/e I guess they do have a Windows 10 Home. :)

If you insist on Win 10 Home, then I would just follow Option #1 in these directions, to do a clean install of Win 110 Home to your SSD.

If you were adding an ssd to your computer, what route would you take to get windows and your programs etc setup on the ssd?

/e Hook up the SSD, boot from the HDD, then do...
Option #1

OK - I read through it...basically download and copy to disk/usb...when I do the install do I need to disconnect my hdd? Also, do you happen to know how big it is? /e looks like 4gbs!

If you wanna keep Win 7, then you can't use the upgrade....you'd have to buy Windows 10

When you install select the SSD as the install location...with the SSD hooked up, it MAY let you install to the SSD.

Check your PM's

/e If it doesn't let you install to the SSD, then the other option is to just upgrade the HDD to Windows 10....then CLONE the HDD to the SSD.
