I've been out of the pc parts game for awhile i've always built my own pc's but it's been a few years and I haven't kept up with any of it so i'm coming to you guys

More specific use (what games, what programs): Wow/facebook/bigfish games/come gfx work stuff

amd is supposed to get better performance per dollar, if you absolutely love nvidia you can always stick with it.
390 > 970 > 380 > 960

To explain better (and maybe also worse..>XD), AMD and GeForce do not compare directly, it is a model by model basis. As Penguins noted, certain cards are better than other and thats the hierarchy for those few cards. ^^
