1. Is it worth the price?

2. Are there other laptops that I should be looking at, for this price?

My main requirements are i7, 17 inch display, a decent gpu, an SSD for the OS and a backlit keyboard.

EDIT: Between the one I linked above, and this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314853), which would be better?

It looks like the ones on the acer website ( http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/aspirevnitro ) have the 6700 series processors (skylake).

I mean for that price I would definiteyly try looking for something with at least a 970m or a 980m [unlikely about the 980m]
960m is almost half the graphical power of a 970m.

The laptops are nice, but the graphics being bad are a deal breaker at that price Imo.
Wouldn't buy either one.

Maybe something like this?

Does not have an ssd, but you could add one in yourself. Maybe sounds like a bad compromise but I can't find anything with all of your requirements that doesn't also have a poor gpu (960m or below)

I currently have a 760 in my desktop and it handles all my games fine. Would a 970 make a noticeable difference? If needed, I guess I can not get an ssd, but from what I've heard, ssds make the load times exponentially faster.

Would you recommend a faster gpu over an SSD is the bottomline, I guess.

SSD are most beneficial for non-gaming. opening up apps, booting up, etc. so what's your priority? performance other than gaming (SSD) or performance during gaming (GPU)?

considering that a 250 GB ssd or a 1 TB hybrid drive costs < 100$ and will continue to get cheaper whereas gpus are harder to replace, i'd get the laptop with a better gpu and try to upgrade the hard drive later.

I am not planning on using the laptop for heavy gaming. But that said, it would be nice to have a good gpu.. but I've had a 760 for a while now, and it can totally run any game that I play. So, do I really need the 970?

How much of a speed difference does an ssd make? Is it really that noticeable? I haven't used an ssd so I'm not sure.

Also, if I go with the msi, can I but a separate ssd and install it in the laptop?

Edit: and the asus that I had listed had an IPS display. Isn't that a better option than a regular display?

What games are you trying to play? 970 is plenty of power. It if you can snag a 980m go for it

Then you're fine getting a 960m at that point
