Hey guys,

I'm looking to build my first PC, and I looked at some threads to piece together a build. The main objective was to get a decent PC for an affordable price.
Right now, I've gotten it down to $640 with Windows 8.1 and 23" ASUS VS239H-P 23.0" monitor.

I'm currently working from an early 2011 MBP, so anything is an upgrade

2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Here's more details about the specs

I'll be using the PC for work, although I do play games like sc2 from time to time.

Let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can improve this build.

To start, I'd grab your copy of windows from Reddit.
theres a subforum called Microsoftsoftwareswap and they sell windows keys for about 20-25 dollars, depending on what you want. That should free up your budget considerably.
If you are working then time is important to you, at least it is when im doing work, so I included a solid state drive as that is going to speed up everything just a bit, overall cutting tons of hours just waiting for stuff to load over the course of the drives life-span. If you dont need the 1tb of storage you can remove that from your build to save some money.

I also changed your graphics card to a 265 for much less. it's only a little bit less performance [about 15-20% less frames on average] and is a huge value for the money. If you do the rebate its makes it all the sweeter.

Otherwise the build looks pretty good to me :)
If you want, maybe consider dual monitors as you can pick up some acers for 100 bucks. [22 inch, 1080p]. Only 60 dollars more for the extra screen space. Idk what kind of work you do but it may or may not be better!

just y'arr an os, and don't include the price of a monitor in your rig budget, bad idea and you'll always get a worse-off rig if you have to budget a monitor in.

Hey Raptor, thanks for the reply. The SSD, cheaper graphics card, and the windows key are going to be great additions. I copied my build after reading some of your older posts so thank you!
Do you have any suggestions on how I can make this desktop last 4+ years?

Sayaka, thanks for the build. I wish I could afford that i5 processor, but I'm trying to stay ~$600-$700 after including a monitor

I see no reason why it wouldnt last 4 years!

If at some point it starts running games slowly, you can simply upgrade the graphics or CPU, since the 3258 mobo will allow you to throw in an i5 or an i7 without any hassle. and at which point both of those processors should be a bit cheaper, used.

But even builds made 4-6 years ago are still running games just fine [fine meaning, not maxed/60fps] so I don't think you're going to really have any issues, unless you just simply want higher graphics settings.

At this low of a budget, I wouldn't even worry about an SSD.
