Download speccy and post a s/s of your system specs.

Its more likely than not a waste of money. Why do you want to upgrade your RAM?

I would...DDR2 is way overpriced now, because we're all on DDR3 and soon to be DDR4.

well next question i suppose is if i do hold out for a new comp

are any of my parts worth saving for a new comp
Mobo: IPIBL-LA (Berkeley)
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600
Ram: 3 GB(2 x 1gb +2 x 512mb) Speed: PC2-5300 MB/sec
GPU Nvidia 9800 gt (or similar can't recall and at work atm)
Hard drive: one stock 320gb drive failed and replaced with 120gb SSD
PSU: 600w (or 650w cant recall)

I dont really have any problems with my current Comp save this ram problem usually only get to 30% of CPU, dont experience graphics lag for the games I play.

Also thanks for the advice everyone.

e/
Could i ust upgrade the mobo and ram and leave everything else? or would i run into tons of compatability problems?

Not worth upgrading the mobo, unless you found a decent LGA 775 board for stupid cheap.

For a quick bump in performance, you can BSEL mod your processor which pushes it to 3ghz instead of the stock 2.4ghz. upgrade the ram to 4gb, you can get 8gb for $30-$40 on 3bay

not worried about the CPU as i dont encounter performance problems on its side.

As for 3bay.

would you be able to help point me in the right direction? Im kinda sketched out about alot of these hong kong based sellers, but if anyone has experience with ram from 3bay ill take a leap.

THe only other problem i have is compatibility, alot of them say AMD, which i guess wont work, but if its not specified how can i tell it will work for me? (other than making sure it meets the 240pin, ddr2-800 criteria)

Obviously change the link address; This should work for you, granted you will get a random brand - I've never had issues; I have the same motherboard as you from a pre-built desktop in one of my systems.
