Work computer first, then video games. He wants it to be processor and memory focused (he's telling me i7, I'm actually trying to talk him down a little on the processor) and 16g of ram.

I have an old copy of Windows 7 he can have, so we don't need an OS, but we do need a keyboard and mouse in the budget. US pricing (49424 zip)

I'd like to show him 2 builds, one with an i5 and one with an i7

What softwares does he use when working?

If its only office, some citrix, he'll have no need of i7, and the i5 will be perfect for mixing work and gaming

Left out mobo cuz no good deals popped out. Get i5 4590 from Staples to pricematch with microcenter.
I'd get a 970 Refurbed from EVGA for like 240-270 if your friend can wait.
