I basically don't know anything about computers, I hear Alienware and ASUS's are ok? What do you guys think?

ASUS or MSI ....stay away from Alienware (which is really DELL) they cost much more that what they're worth

To my untrained eye it looks roughly equivalent.

Largely the same. I don't think the Sager has the changeable keyboard backlight colors, but eh whatever. You may also be able to get the Sager a bit cheaper than the MSI from Newegg. I haven't bothered to go through the customization and look. Xoticpc is pretty reputable for laptops and you can't really go wrong there either.

For 1500-1600$ I wouldn't settle for anything less than a laptop with a 980M off Xoticpc

Are you related to ghot? None of those are in budget.
