Helping a buddy build a computer, been about a year since I've been looking at prices/what is optimal so I'm going off my best judgement.

Main concerns:

1. Will the computer utilize the 144 hz refresh rate on at least medium-high settings of games that are as intense as say The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?
2. Do you see any parts that may be less optimal than something for only a slight difference in price range?
3. My current computer uses the CM Hyper 212 EVO but on an 8320 and keeps it pretty nice, what about this? I've read that it isn't the be all end all it once was, which would make sense because it was king for a while.

Basically anything you see that is a concern to you, could you let me know? Want to build the best computer for the price for my friend.

Thanks friends!

3 months is a long time, not worth the wait imo, not if you have nothing.

Anyway, dont get that 290x.
1. that particular asus model has a shit cooler that they did not make well. that gpu runs very hot compared to other models.
2. 290x is a poor cost/performance ratio. The difference between 290 and 290x is somewhere along the lines of 5%. But the cost difference, is usally in the ballpark of 20%++ Would definitely get a 290.

Otherwise, fine choices [except i dont know monitors]
212 is still most relevant air cooler for cost/performance.

because it really isn't worth waiting unless you are talking about upgrading from hardware that isn't that isn't terribly old.
The only thing maybe worth waiting for is the new 390x, because we dont know shit about HBM and how it will perform on games. Skylake and ddr4 are minor improvements at best. [and ddr4 is worthless to most people anyway]

Also I forgot to mention, you'll make use of 144 hz but only up to the amount of FPS you have. So if you got 80 fps you'd only realistically be able to view 80 fps.

Yes i realize dx12 is hot shit.
No i dont realize how much skylake and ddr4 will improve because we have no dx12 games and no skylake.
For all practical purposes. Waste of time to wait for skylake, as gains wont be as dramatic as you say over haswell. [unless massive is 30-40%, if we're lucky]]

literally new gpus will be 20% faster
skylake is 15-20% faster
dx12 is 10-20% faster
usb 3.1 is double as 3.0
more pci lanes for sata/nvme/m.2
ddr4 is twice as fast as ddr3

I really hope your wrong because that all sounds really depressing. the 970 was 35-50% faster than the 770.
Dx12 has shown insanely dramatic differences, ranging from 100-400%
Ram speed is useless on games now, unless dx12 changes that, moot point.
Pcie lanes are nice but I don't see an additional 4 being a serious game changer for most people. - besides this is actually a worse argument because currently AMD's fx supports a 2x16 or 4x8 config, so if dx12 actually lets you use all 8 [or unlimited as they have posited] cores without any fuss, you'll need an i7, minimum, to really compete with an 8320 to out perform in terms of graphics.

Again, for all practical purposes, it does not make sense to wait for skylake. Might as well wait for the new zen processors while youre at it.
