Hello all,

This will be for my two young sons - I have RAM/case/keyboard/mouse/monitor

Budget:300-400?
More specific use (what games, what programs): WoW, Oracle Virtual box, etc.
Planned time until purchase: 1 week
Do you need an Operating System?: no
Do you have any specific preferred components?: I need a power supply/motherboard/video card/CPU - I would prefer that the mobo be something worth keeping for a while.
Do you need a sound or wireless card?: no on board is fine and it will be wired.
Do you want stock cooling or do you plan on overclocking?: stock
Do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard?: don't need any of this
Zip code/location? (Shipping costs): 20877

Thanks for your help!

Are you interested in doing rebates or do you want to avoid using a rebate in price calculations?

edit: I was thinking something along these lines:

I went with a pentium build specifically because of WoW. There is also the added benefit that the mobo I picked can house a 4690k for overclocking. So in 1-3 years if you wanted to make it a bit more serious of a gaming pc, you could just drop in a 4690k + better gpu.

Question, I've been wondering if a AMD core would work for me.. what do you think?

rebates aren't a big deal I can do that paperwork -- its money saved THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

AMD would work fine. I would have gone amd had you not mentioned a long-term mobo. If you buy AMD you'll have no upgrade path in the future. youll have to buy a new mobo for a better processor.

Heres why I chose the Intel's Pentium:

1. Highly Cost efficient and has the same performance of an I5 4690k in terms of performance per core. [I.e if you are using 2 cores max on both processors, they will perform very similarly]
2. Using that mobo allows to upgrade to any of the core processors, i3, i5, i7 and overclock them, provided you buy the K versions.
3. WoW is processor heavy and would get better performance out of Intel's superior Single core performance.

Had you not specified WoW in particular or a mobo choice, I would have chosen an AMD Fx 6300 [$95] or 8320 [$130] with an MSI gaming mobo for about $80.

I'm not savvy on buying used hardware in a whole machine, so for me, it's hard to evalulate.

That fragbox at 200 is pretty appealing, only because the case is custom, and I like it. Id say without putting a value on the, the case its worth about 125-150 dollars to me.
I think 200 is fair, but if you can get him to take 150 for it, I'd think that'd be sweet

I Would consider that intel 2700k @ 400 if he'd take it.

I'm basing my estimates on Ebay prices of the parts used and shooting lower, while also keeping in mind what you can do new. Past that, I'd hope someone else can add their opinion :)
