The GTX 970 is $400 (Canadian). Seems to be about 2/3 of the way toward new graphics cards being released (to September? idk).

My brother wants to build a new computer soon, and I just need to toss a better GPU into my desktop.

It will probably be at least a month before either of us buys anything anyways.

I've had an i7 2600k since launch, and still use a 5770 graphics card... would like to upgrade from 8gb ram to 16gb, but too expensive...

Ive read something about new gpus coming in may or early june.
Regarding ram, what do u do with ur pc? Only gaming? Video rendering etc etc

Extra RAM would just be nice, more convenient. I use photoshop, lightroom, play games, lots of tabs open, multitasking, etc. Lightroom and photoshop can hog up a lot if I'm also running chrome... But that upgrade isn't really too necessary, 8GB works fine.

290x was only $299 CAD
970 was 369.99 after MIR g1 gaming model too.

New radeon 300 line is slated to debute at computex in a couple weeks. Not sure when they're gonna actually hit the market but shouldn't be long. Either way I'd be keeping an eye on a lot of 200 series gpus dropping in price here and there.
