The best antivirus is just common sense

protection is for all round. But if you mean, least performance decreasing. I'd say it doesn't matter nowadays.
I use Microsoft security essentials + malwarebytes premium protection. Haven't had any issues.

have to agree there, the free ones that i'm aware of are outdated as far as performance goes (they protect reasonably well if you know how to surf the web). Just never go Norton, i swear they haven't changed much since the 1990s.

Webroot is probably the smoothest one I'm aware of.

Anti virus doesn't do you any good if you don't use your brain though so be vigilant either way. But its always better to have anti virus even if you know how to browse safely.

I payed for an ESET subscription.
No virus' so far, user interface is great and customizable, and very lightweight on resources. Would recommend as I've switch from being an AVG and a MSE+Malwarebytes consumer.

paid: Kaspersky (BitDefender second place)
free: Avira

Just check out av-comparatives and other av tests.

I don't use antivirus though cause I live life on the edge.

Avira is free and consistently ranks at the very top in detection (though it's a bit below average in false positives)

Good recommendations in this thread, especially staying away from Norton (and McAfee). Even if you get them free, I have seen too many Windows 8 machines get anal raped by those 2x AV's
