Honestly your CPU isn't that bad. You won't really get much more performance by upgrading it. [at least not 300-350 dollars worth, the cost for an intel cpu/mobo unless you live near microcenter ^^]
Is your main cpu overclocked? if not I would buy yourself a good cooler like the hyper 212 evo [30 bucks] and overclock that to get yourself some more performance.
On the matter of your kid, you could just buy him some good budget gear like the g3258 or a nice athlon build. that would be the most economical route, Imo.
3258 + mobo
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/r42WBmActually it is not currently over clocked so I could go that route and I do live near a micro center. And yeah the kid doesn't need much he plays some train Sim and mine craft but he is interested so figured it's time he builds one for himself and I havn't upgraded since the release of the x6 I have so figured maybe it was time to spend like 6-700 on some upgrades. Unless I sell my 56 chevy then I will be doing a complete overhaul and going all out. UT we will see what spring brings for that.
