Ok so now that i have upgraded my graphics card (went with mid grade r9 280x) now looking at upgrading my motherboard and cpu

what should i go with?

any good combo deals out there?

From what i have seen Intel is the way to go even though i cam currently running AMD Phenom II x6 1100T AM3+ socket

if there is a recommended AM3+ Processor thats a decent upgrade then great but would like to fully change as i will be using old parts to have my son throw together his first PC together to play is games.

Honestly your CPU isn't that bad. You won't really get much more performance by upgrading it. [at least not 300-350 dollars worth, the cost for an intel cpu/mobo unless you live near microcenter ^^]

Is your main cpu overclocked? if not I would buy yourself a good cooler like the hyper 212 evo [30 bucks] and overclock that to get yourself some more performance.

On the matter of your kid, you could just buy him some good budget gear like the g3258 or a nice athlon build. that would be the most economical route, Imo.

Actually it is not currently over clocked so I could go that route and I do live near a micro center. And yeah the kid doesn't need much he plays some train Sim and mine craft but he is interested so figured it's time he builds one for himself and I havn't upgraded since the release of the x6 I have so figured maybe it was time to spend like 6-700 on some upgrades. Unless I sell my 56 chevy then I will be doing a complete overhaul and going all out. UT we will see what spring brings for that.
