other routes

go fx 8320 chip/mobo keep rest the same stay under budget
go with the i5 and downgrade to a 960 or grab a r9 290

i5/290 is same performance as the previous build, but you'd have to go pleb amd gpu status for ~40 bucks less (the tri-x 290 is sexi though)

if you are willing to go slightly above budget the build i first posted is what i would get in today's market.

PS: you can always add a SSD later unless you have a reusable HDD then forgo the HDD i listed and just get a SSD

get a cheaper motherboard; you wont need a z97 board. you wont have any performance loss. added a better video card. changed a few items for better prices

But why amd and not intel ?

AMD typically run cheaper and if you're not going to do any rendering they perform well for gaming. 8320 can easily overclock to 8350 specs under air. It's a good build for the money.
