Does an optical drive need the sata and bigger connection next to it for it to work? Or just the sata?

Right now I have a separate power cord running to the optical drive and I need that slot in the power supply for my.molex connection so I can run a couple case fans

you need the sata for sure because thats the data

and then u power it one way

Ok so it does need both of those cables. Hmm ok I'll just have to get creative with piggybacking and such I guess
