I think I am going to upgrade my CPU (and motherboard) from an AMD A10-5800k to an Intel i7-4790k. I splurged on a GTX 970 (upgraded from an AMD Radeon HD 4800) and now my CPU is bottlenecking me during certain applications. Can't have that now, can we?

Any opinions, discussions or input on this matter?

Well if you want it and can afford it then get one.

If you're just gaming you won't experience any real benefit by getting an i7 over an i5.
If you do some heavy CPU lifting then you will. Idk what more there is to discuss :P

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231518
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817822016&Tpk=17-822-016
Cooling Fan (until I can get a liquid cooling system): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835214023

Disregard the high CPU temp readout.

I'm not even going to bother linking the CPU I'm looking at because everybody knows what an i7-4790k is.

Motherboard option #1 that I am strongly considering: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132125
Motherboard option #2 that I was considering until I saw how much better the Asus board was for only 25-35% more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130768

I will try to post pictures of the inside of my current computer. My friend did the initial build in Dec. of 2012. I intend to reuse most of the components I have as I am almost certain that they will be compatible.
I am a little shy to post pictures of the inside of my computer because my friend's cable management was... Well, awful. I intend to clean that up when I do the rebuild though.

If I was strictly doing basic computing and playing games I would definitely go with the i5, but the thing I notice my sluggish performance in the most is when I try to stream gameplay. Of course with a lower-end processor this would be a problem, but I suspect that with some newer games I would still have a little bit of trouble playing games and trying to stream in 720p/1080p.
I'm not too concerned about specifics on stream settings and whatnot, but I definitely think for the price difference that I will appreciate the hyperthreading of the i7. Hell, I've never had the opportunity to really splurge on a build but I've been working about 50-60hrs a week at my new job so I thought it was time to spoil myself. :P

(side note)

One of my biggest concerns is whether or not my case will have enough space for a liquid cooler.

well for now, you should go into your bios and set your ram timings correctly.
It's at 1300 by default, when your ram is 2133.
It matters a lot when using an APU.

I'd go with this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128706&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
or gigabyte gaming 7/ud3h/ud3h bk
otherwise, out of those 2, definitely the asus. Though you're wasting a lot of $$$ for it

Does you internet have more than 5upload speed?
cos even if you upgrade, and your internet upload speed is less than 5, ur not gonna be able to stream 720/1080

50mb/s download and 10mb/s upload.

I will set my RAM timings accordingly. Honestly that is something I have no experience with so I left it as-is. Also, I do not use the on-die graphics with this processor anymore.

Perhaps I am being a little ignorant, but I am very tired and am too lazy to read and compare the motherboards right now. - What are the main differences between the Asus board I was eyeballing and the ones that you recommended? Money is definitely an object, but at the same time I am willing to spend a little more for a higher quality product. But I don't want to just spend money to spend money.

honestly, not much. Most $120+ mobo's are more than enough for typical needs/uses.
The sniper has a better than average sound card built into the mobo.
i have the gigabyte ud3h bk and its known for durability & the quality of it is amazing, and it was only $120 when i got it.
Spending $100 more for the asus hero isn't worth it imo, when there's alternatives that do just as well for a lot less.

I rather use that $100 for a sexy case for airflow.

LOL, are you serious?????

MUCH better for ONLY 25%-35% more?
For what? Are you 100% sure you even understand - even after probably reading through lots of "guides" - what the differences between those baords are and what exactly they mean regarding your system setup???
To be honest, I don't think you do... you COULD use a 79,99$ board like this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-h97performance

(90$ cheaper than the MSI board, 128$ cheaper than your ASUS choice) ...and you wouldn't notice a difference AT ALL, while the price difference would definitely buy you other components that actually give more FPS, better loading times, faster program start-ups, a more quiet system, better temps or whatever else you could think of...
