i currently have a 290 but it lacks in some areas

Don't upgrade now, wait for new 3xx series from amd.

Which "areas" would your 290 be lacking in?
Don't see how a 970 would greatly increase your system's performance compared to a 290, unless you're only watching yur FPS in OSD while gaming ofc...

Well that and the 970 doesn't run at 94C when playing Oregon Trail.
