He's looking for a replacement, but we're both unsure of really where to start.

He had an Alienware m17x r3. (like this one http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookreview/alienware-m17x-r3-review/
The card in it was an AMD Radeon HD 6990.

Looking for either a minor upgrade, or even the same card, but I wasn't able to find them on Newegg. I may have been looking through it all incorrectly but all we could both find were Desktop cards as opposed to one for his laptop.

The bad news would be preferable to the bad news, if you get my drift.

He's got a decent paying job at the moment, and tax check is coming but I don't think he'd pay any more than 500 or so.

That's mildly depressing

Call dell support and ask for sparepart prices, state your service tag, and they'll come up with a price.

but as ghot says, investing in a new one might be the smartest thing to do!

Just drop $500 on a new decent card, it's easily replaceable in that unit and will cost less than buying a new decent laptop.

I see the same 6990m for $195 on 3bay.

Don't forget the M. Its a 6990m not a 6990. Huge difference :D

As WWI said, he can either drop $200 on 3bay or look for a compatible card for that slot and get an upgrade.
