Oc with your current cpu cooler or get a better cooler ie the corsair h80i for potential better overclocks

Upgrade your gpu to a gtx 970/80 or r9 290x

Or wait a bit as new gpus are on the horizon

Maybe get a bigger ssd (Samsung) if you're running out of space

Not really worried about hd space, mostly I was thinking about upgrading the cpu and gpu, I'm not sure though if I should go crossfire, or just get a better one like you listed.

i'd prefer just to upgrade outright

also just doing a quick google search i think 970 > 670s in SLI...also a more future proof card with 4gb VRAM (in case you upg your monitor resolution)

your CPU still competes with the current chipset (haswell - 4690k)...if you want more juice you can overclock it with your 212 or get a beefier CPU cooler like I mentioned and OC it even higher

most I would be willing to spend is 1k, though from what I"m seeing I may not have to, I just figured I built this back in 2012, so I assumed some upgrades were needed.

you could get a nice monitor to go with a new GPU

There is no reason to upgrade. Your system is perfectly fine.

If you want some minor improvements, here are a few things I would recommend:

Recommended
GPU: 7970 --> GTX 970 (ASUS, EVGA, or MSI, whichever is on sale)
HDD: 500 GB --> 1 TB (Seagate Barracuda)

Optional
RAM: Something other than CL9 1333. Check what your mobo can support.
Mobo: Current --> ASRock Z77 Extreme4 (Getting harder to find, might not be worth it new)

If you really want to splurge, get a 980 over the 970.
