my video card is dump, looking to upgrade.
Don't want to sped over $300 for a new one though.

Honestly, if you're going to spend $300, you may as well spend an extra $40 and get a GTX 970.

to be honest i dont know much about video cards which would be a good 970 ? if its only a little bit more i will consider it

Either get 970 or wait several months for AMDs new GPU series, assuming your PSU will be able to handle it.
