I play a game called Heroes of Newerth. I play it with all the special graphics effects turned off, and everything turned to its lowest settings.
I still experience lag frequently, and I'm on a brand new MacBook Pro. I know Macs aren't designed for gaming, but Heroes of Newerth is a 2009 game with patches.
I have a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory 1600 MHz DDR3, and the Intel HD Graphics 4000 card with 1024 MB of dedicated memory
My idea is that it's probably my connection. I play on my computer wirelessly in the basement of my house, while the router is on the main floor. The router I have is also extremely cheap and unprotected
Could my router situation be causing these spike/lag issues? Do I have to update my Mac somehow? I have no idea

U need a graphics card.
U can't really game with a built in intel igpu.
Overheating can cause "lag" and slow down as well.
Only option you got is purchase a new computer or a real gaming laptop.

It may be your internet connection but that IGPU will hold you back a lot
