7870 XT is based of the Tahiti architecture, while the GHz & Standard edition is using the Pitcairn architecture, in Short the XT is superior.

This... it's almost in the same class as the 7950... it's a great buy for the price.. but if you are on a budget the 7870 ghz is still a good buy... Personally if you can swing it I'd go w/ Battleships build.. it's a great one.

The 7870 XT (Tahiti LE) is a 7900 based card, but it has had its parts disabled:

I await the critics.

here's a better ram + case combo : http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1261587 ( 86$ for case + ram - 15$ mir)
even if the case comes with a psu , don't use it because it will not be able to provide enough power for a gaming machine. if you don't need a spare power supply for a web browsing machine/non gaming machine that isn't a workstation , pm me because ill take it from you if you want :)

Great parts and choices for the price but

I'd knock it down to a standard 7870 or the ghz version + a 6300 so he can fit windows in there and keep it reasonable... plus I'd drop it down to a 500-550 w psu if there is a cheaper better one...

Something like this

same thing for the case + ram
