Thanks for the link! I had seen one of your other posts recommending it so I had gone ahead and downloaded it...my video card is running around 80c and I am not even playing a game...

R9 270 correct? Or the original one from the PC?

Edit: Noctua makes really good 80mm case fanb

5850's are hot cards....get this:

Quickie Guide to setting GPU fan speed with MSI Afterburner (free program)

In MSI afterburner...

1. Just to the right of the fan speed slider... un-click the Auto
2. Then, move the slider to 40-60% or until the noise gets on your nerves :)
3. Then click: Apply
4. Then a tad further left, click: Apply overclocking at system startup

The GTX 960 should run a lot cooler as well. But you can use MSI Afterburner, to crank up the vid card's fan speed on the 5850, then on the GTX 960.

/ee The other reason vid cards run hot, it that ya need to blow all the dust out of them...the same as the CPU cooler and heatsink and the case fans.

Nice, I think Im going with the noctuas...they are a little more expensive than some of the others but it seems to be a reputable brand.

Good :D

Another question! If I need to get an adapter and attach directly to my power supply, the fan doesnt need to be connected to my motherboard...correct?

Also, is it bad to just set the fan on my video card to max at all times?

No it can be connected to your power supply directly. However, there should be a header for it on your motherboard as most companies have more than one.

Setting your fans to run 100% all the time can get quite noisy. It also shortens the life of your fans. Look for articles on setting custom fan profiles in Afterburner. Everybody has their own way of doing it. My way might not agree with everyone else's as like to set them for 100% once the card reaches 80C or higher. Some people ramp them up at much lower settings. It's a matter of preference and sometimes trial and error. If you watch your temps while gaming then you can see if your profile is working or not. Like I said, trial and error. There's no 100% correct way in doing it.

I ran the GTX 280 at 100% all the time...it wasn't that noisy. But back in those days, vid cards were like broilers. ;)

/e

@OP ...just set the fan speed (fixed or fan curve) so the card stays under 75C at full load.

Full load would be like the free Unigine Valley benchmark.

We're talking reference cooler AMD card. That's why temps are s high. Bad cooling. Fan is loud as hell.

My GTX 280 was ref card as well. They were just hot cards back then, with or without 3rd party mods.
The fan was quieter than the CPU cooler, which was the pretty common 32 dBa.
