Assuming $1200 was his budget, even if you threw a the cheapest 980 and H97 board into the mix, it won't fit $1200.

Not sure how he managed to get to 1200$ tbh. When the thread was opened, the partpicker link already showed like >1300$ (even after MIR).
I just compared prices then:
