What's the resolution of the screen you have and the one you want to get.

1920 x 1080

This is my old monitor.
I haven't looked much into a new monitor yet. I just know I want a new one for 144hz 1ms response.

You'll be fine. A GTX 1080 can handle that.

Get Zalman ZM STG-2 thermal paste. Order that now. The stuff that comes pre-applied is not that good.

I used to think this was the case but after replacing it several times I've come to the conclusion the stock paste is indeed good enough. The stock coolers themselves are the things that aren't very good, paste that comes with them does well enough.

This has at least been my experience on the stock coolers for lga 775/65w cpu, lga 1050/84w cpu, and AM3/125w cpu

I do not know how true this holds for modern stock coolers, AMD has much better ones now than they used to so there might be a case there if they are still using the same paste, but Intel's have gotten much worse starting with Skylake so it can only be more pointless to change it for those.

agreed stock paste is fine, just the cooler sucks.
