Okay, then do the BIOS update. Huge deal, right?

There's a chance you won't even be able to get to the point where you could update the BIOS using a 4690k CPU. Then it IS a huge deal... not everyone has a compatible CPU lying around at home. Used ones cost money, take their time to ship etc.

Please elaborate...

B85 Mobos can OC. Some Asus H97 Mobos can OC, but not as well.

H97 Performance can OC. H87 Performance could OC as well. No issues with voltage/VRMs or anything else. Equally good results on both motherboards with no difference to B85/Z87/Z97 boards of the same tier.

Ah, I thought you picked an Asus board. My mistake.

In any case, he should still go with a Z97. His budget will allow for it, and there's no reason not to go with one.

In general I'd agree.
But ImO he wasted too much money there, while making cuts when it comes to storage (128 GB SSD is fine, yet you won't fit too many games on that and 256 GB SSD offer better price/performance).
Same for PSU... going with other components would have allowd for a GTX 980 even at the same budget...

Not many people need the 980. The 970 will probably be more than enough for his needs.

As for storage, even though I currently use my 250GB SSD to store my games on, I want to use one of the Seagate hybrids instead. The games will load slower, but not by much.

Ofc nobody really NEEDS a 980. Well.. nobody really needs ANY of the parts we discuss in this sub tbh^^
But assuming the budget should be spent completely, H97 + 8 GB RAM + 980 will net you the better performance compared to Z97 + 16 GB + 970 in games :)
