Thanks, that's exactly what my build is.

Better performance in gaming? --> No.
Upgradeability? --> Yes, to another FX, so again --> No.
OC capabilities? --> Yes, but not with the stock cooler for sure. And it would take a decent chip and more than mild overclocked to outperform the i3.

At least add a TX3 or something similar to your build.

Well rounded build, SSD for speed but you can drop it for a stronger GPU, but the card should fair fine with most titles at high-ultra 1080p.

Alternative Intel build with an R9 280 for better performance:

i3-4330, which will run most games faster than the suggested FX and is more futureproof, since the mainboard will support Intel's next gen CPUs should you ever decide to upgrade.

Better performance in gaming? --> No, but you won't notice the difference, if any.
Upgradeability? --> You could at least do better and pick a board you can OC on for the future chip.
OC Capabilities? --> Let's see your i3 do that.

He seems to be on a very tight budget and we don't know whether that'll change drastically in the future.
That + a better IPC for next gen Intel CPUs and Intel's general route away from high overclocks make a Z-board seem like a waste of money to me, especially in that price range.

Got me! I knew I had forgotten something. Could save another $8 there... unfortunately that won't buy him an upgrade from the R9 280.

Okay, final Intel build here:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CBCdzy --> R9 285, TX3 aftermarket cooler, a decent and properly cooled µATX case and was able to fit an i5-4360 @3,7 Ghz in the budget. $541,90 after MIR.

For the price of that CPU, I'd jump on something different. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/k4xHsY

In general I'd go with an AMD build as well... but AMD FX-8320 & AM3+ offer zero upgradeability in the future compared to LGA1150 / i3. Also, that Intel CPU performs better in almost all AAA titles in FHD (which should be the reference for an R9 285 ImO).
