I don't get what you're saying here, you posted a whole new build and then critized me for suggesting saving in areas to replace more of the build...?
I usually really enjoy your input, with using the 8 core series for budget streaming, ect. but the 8 cores wont be utalized here (most likely), so why spend the extra cash on it?
970 vs 290... i realize the 290 does perform better, but I'm at least a little pro enviornment and i like sold price:performance ratio, so the 960 speaks to me, but i'll openly admit i'm selling out of my own pocket with that one.

OP has FX 4100..why get 6core for 2 more cores with your logic? Might as well reuse the cpu.
I'd just suggest a ud3h mobo with msi 290x combo, 22 off, and 40mir atm. Then a new PSU, cooler and call it a day

6300 has better single core performance, so its not the same logic...

although, i'll admit, i like your setup best so far

can you link that mobo?

the only mobo i can find is intel with the ud3h

and here is attempt #2 - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fMxsxr <- ofc, the 290 can fit in that budget as well, and cross fire is supported

just so OP is aware, sli ready when you are, both mobo and power supply support the 2nd card

Because that's the best his budget will get him.

Like I said, we're all going for best upgrades for the money, not half-assed upgrades for the money.

I prefer the term well-rounded. the ability to upgrade easy in the future in this guys opinion is worth a small gpu loss and almost no noticable cpu loss on a gaming computer.

Just throwing things in because they have $50 left in the budget isn't my style, but i guess you can do things however you want

i like your style, i still think that he won't be able to enjoy the upgrade because of the cpu choke, but can't say the money isn't well placed

That's why you leave the building to those who actually know what they're doing.

And spin the term however you want. It doesn't change the fact that half-assed upgrades are still half-assed upgrades. There's no getting around it.

@ OP - Go with WWI's or my advice, and ignore this idiotic debate.

if you want to go that route of blow all the money on cpu, power supply and gpu... you can do that, just be smarter about it

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/dHXy3C <- 970 > 2 unused cores

Still got room for some ssd action too... or a less cheap psu ^^

Again, this is why you leave the building to people who actually know what you're doing.

You are not one of them.

If you want the thing for gaming only (no streaming, no rendering/editing work), go with this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cLzfCJ

Intel quad-core build + R9 280; included a 128 GB SSD for OS + usual programs + probably your favorite game(s). Keep the case, RAM and HDD.
Sell your spare parts (CPU + motherboard) to save some money. That build will leave you with an LGA-1150 socket mainboard, which should be supported by Intel's next gen CPUs as well.

Otherwise, this:

If you want to stick with the prebuilt and upgrade, it's doable.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JZ7XWZ

Could also claim the rebates and buy a 240+GB SSD.

Be sure to let me know exactly which motherboard you have in there so I can check compatibility.

Make sure to include an SSD. You will love it.
