I go by the Aquarium theory.

Ppl buy a 10 gallon aquarium for their kids or themselves...then 6 months later a 20 gallon....then a 55 gallon etc. :)

/e In the long run, it's better to just get something greater than you think you will need....cause sooner or later you will need something greater. It's also cheaper in the long run.
His original build would be fine for low req's games. But then he'll wanna play Farcry 4 or some shyt....and then have to spend another $300 or so.
IMO, it's just better to get something GOOD to start with.

LOL, I rather like to think of it as...closing the barn door BEFORE the horses escape.

Yeah I think you guys are probably right. I might just sit on this for a while until tax rebates, then spend like 800 bucks on something that will be both an htpc and not suck completely.

You won't regret that...and best of all, if you do build a decent rig, it WILL be cheaper in the long run.

Probably a good idea if you plan to do anything other than streaming and a home theater device. I didn't read enough into your search that's the only reason I suggested the nuc haha.

Yeah I remember how many good years I got out of my old amd gaming rig, bought it all for like 700 bucks and it still runs shit pretty decent.
Sold it six months ago for 300 dollars, lol. It was like an amd triple core phenom II that I had unlocked and overclocked to 3 ghz on an asus motherboard.
I'll probably be back looking for more advice then. The mini-itx board seems to have limitations but making space for a large desktop every time I have to move is too difficult.

I might get a raspberry pi kit and duct tape it to the back of this old monitor for a ghetto portable desktop/media center in the meantime. With the price of sd cards (unbelievably low per gigabyte) it's practically viable storage nowadays.
