Depends if he's playing a multi threaded game or using a multi threaded app. Otherwise, you can barely tell the difference.

True, I'm just thinking of the best consumer grade CPU that still supported Vanilla DDR3

As you know from owning a 2600K. In 2011 the hyperthreading didn't matter for games and a 2500K was pretty much the same. But if you look at them being benched side by side in modern games, the 2600K has as much as a 30% edge over it's i5 Brother in plenty of titles.

And @ OP the term future proof is real stupid especially when buying used hardware

, but I sincerely believe getting the 4790K would Keep that PC relavent for years to come as more games and apps are developed to work with >4 threads

The Bay has the CPU listed for < $200 usd, and the boards as well. so in your budget.
