Go with the parts I picked, not the ones you picked.
Don't listen to John Miller, he's a troll.

You can update case later. What I posted fits in your $400 budget.

I found a Ryzen 5 1600 combo with the ASUS Strix B350-F Gaming on Newegg for ~$285 with a $20 mail-in rebate, which seems like a good deal. Would've gone for the ASROCK one posted but I missed the sale apparently.

If that sounds good I just need to figure out what RAM to get. It's so confusing, looking at QVL lists, trying to figure out what model works at the proper speed with the mobo, whether to get 2x4 (more expensive, less expandability, temporarily improved performance) vs 1x8 (cheaper, allows me to buy a second 8gb in future, temporarily reduces performance).

Any thoughts on this RAM?: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232087

It is by far the cheapest 2800+ 8GB RAM that's in stock, but I can't figure out if it will work properly with my mobo.

Ok, I made my purchase.

I found this RAM which was slightly pricier than the 1x8GB 2800 that I posted but it's 3200 and 2x4 for only $90 so seemed perfect https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220983

Also bought the Ryzen 5 1600 and the Asus Strix B350-F Gaming mobo as a bundle for $265 after rebate.

Skipped the case for now.

Thanks for everyone's help and feel free to input on the choices.

Yeah I keep hearing how important fast RAM is but couldn't figure out what would run at the proper speed on my mobo so hopefully I can get it to run up to speed.

I'm afraid he's right, from what I've seen of your posts around the forum, you either troll or have no idea about what you talk about and try to look like you know something.

Just a side note.. it matters a ton for AMD CPUs but not for Intel.
