agree with early access games being badly optimized. they run like ass no matter how good your system is (unless you get a super baller card).
1080 is justified if you do or have always liked playing early access games. i went with 1080 ti but i've had a bit of a streak when it comes to playing early access games.
super into pubg right now ^_^
more $$ into cpu is my thoughts as well. you should benefit from going 6600k - 7600k/7700k for Early access games as the current bottleneck is usually CPU related, depending on which early access game you're going for. ark is definitely CPU intensive as the instructions are poorly coded.

I could launch ark and let you know what I get :)

also agree that sound card isnt' needed, pretty much ever. get money is better spent on a dac/amp

50 in jungle
60 when hitting things
75 sky
ultra/epic settings w/o motion blur, film grain or that other dumb one
7700k @ 4.7 / 1080 ti no oc

you still dip to 15ish when the world renders again, amazing how they think they can release a game without that being fixed... they have a month until full release and you'd think this would have been addressed..

Being badly optimized _usually_ means it doesn't utilize the gpu well like most mmo's, i.e in blade and soul it makes no diff if u have a gtx 950 or 1080 ti

I think I'm keeping the 1080 just debating between processors now I think and maybe the mobo to go with it?

You really cant go wrong with either processor. They are very close so performance isnt that big a consideration, especially for what you are doing.

You can get whichever processor you like, though personally I favor the Ryzen series because they have more cores and heres why:

1. While the i5 will be the best performance, you're giving up a possible 4 cores and 8 more threads for a 10-15% boost in performance.
2. While you won't use the extra cores immediately, i would wager that 12 more threads will be more useful over the next 5 years than the 10-15% performance will be.

Considering you wont be maxing out any processor you buy with your personal uses, i'd buy the Ryzen because its a better investment overall - it will resell better and/or age better than the i5. The ryzen will also accomodate your needs more if your needs ever change/advance to something more core intensive.

What cpu has 8 cores and 12 threads?

an i5 has 4 cores and 4 threads.
the 8 core ryzen has 8 cores and 16 threads.
8 and 16 minus 4 (4 threads and 4 cores) is 4 cores and 12 threads difference between the i5 and the 8 core ryzen.

edit: its kind of a complicated way to say it, i realize. if you wanted it simpler you could simply say the Ryzen has 12 more threads than the i5 and ignore core count.
