I can still help you out with a build. But don't see the reason why when there is only like 3 months now till you going to travel for a while.
I normally don't recommend laptops, but seems to be the correct answer here.

might be staying in Van for a bit longer, got a rakeback deal, and making ~$115/hour USD might have to stay here for a bit and grind before I go travelling again.

Anyways here is a cheap but nice performaning building under 1000$ with 2 monitors included.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4v7g7h

If you wanna storage lots of movies or large documents you would need to add a HDD with desired storage capacity.

that build looks perfect, anything special I need with it, or is it straightforward to build eg look on youtube. Do I need an operating system?

e/ the wifi adapter is unavailable when I change to country to Canada, could you reccomend another one?

double e/ I could actually just ship it across the border and drive down and pick it up, it's ~$1,400 in Canada dollars, and only $950 US

Buy a key in here:
https://twed.com/product/microsoft-windows-10-home-oem/
Multiple users in here use that site without any trouble.

Then get an USB stick with at least 8GB. Download this tool to create a windows bootable installation on it: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

Other than that just a regular PH Screwdriver. You could touch your radiator if it's grounded before you start assembling to discharge your ESD.

Well not sure about customs etc. Sorry about that didn't notice Vancouver was Canada.
Let me if I should redo the build in CA PCpartpicker.

- Will you store movies and large files on your PC? How many GB have you used on your current PC?

i've got about 78gb on my main drive between my os, various programs, krita projects, path of exile and blade & soul (the only things i have on my ssd). So 104 isn't much.
