yeah that's kind of what i meant, clearing the cmos prompts me to enter bios on the only asus board i had

Awesome. I had this issue multiple times on different systems.
Usually it helps changing from usb 3.0 to usb 2.0 port. Whenever that fails I got an PS/2 keyboard ready and that pretty much always works.
Make sure you have the newest BIOS version
CROSSHAIR VI HERO BIOS 1201
Also upgrade the utilites driver version to Version 1.04.29 if you do not have that.
