The OS will take 24GB as will the motherboard.

Yes, you can use the SSD as the boot drive, which is the smart way to use an SSD. You can still use your 1TB drive, if you stick with your current X58 motherboard.
A hybrid drive is a hard drive with an SSD added into it (same chassis). They are NOT a wise choice.

IF, you ever decide to move into modern times, you will want to replace that Sata 2 hard drive with a modern Sata 3 hard drive.

Honestly I would still do a complete new build. Very soon you won't be able to get that RAM anymore. Same with the motherboard itself. So, if the RAM dies or the motherboard does, you will have to build new, anyways.

/e Btw, I could probably make that full upgrade cheaper, but I choose not to. I believe there is a certain price point that you should not go below, if you want a computer that runs well.

I hear ya... that $1399 is before taxes I assume.

Yeah, it's before taxes and shipping.
There ARE cheaper modern builds. I don't think you will find a more solid modern build for less, though.

THIS would be a better build, but more costly...

Thanks for the comparison.

Not really liquid cooled...It's just an all in one CPU cooler, no messing with assembling it.

As for assembling a comp from scratch...not hard, and there are plenty here that will walk you through it if necessary.

Unlike others i don't think you need a whole new pc, especially for the games you play.

I would just grab a new, efficient gpu like the Gtx 1050 ti or an Rx 470, ram and an ssd and you're golden :)

As to what Ghot said about part failure, by the time your stuff fails, you should be able to afford a new cpu/mobo/ram, since you won't need a new gpu/ssd anymore.

something like this.
included a 240 gb option and a 500gb option but you only need 1 :)

Thanks.

I am able to afford Ghot's but not sure i "need" it for right now, I haven't planned on going to the nex-gen type games yet... trying to avoid the addiction that comes with it. $50 for some ram isn't a big deal to try it out, plus with a re-format I might be good to go. I'll see what urges I get between now and the new year with sale prices and such.

Thank you all for your time.

The only problem with the RAM is that DDR3 is on the way to dead as well. All the newer Intel boards use DDR4.

Also, I wouldn't mix and match RAM. Either get a whole set, 12 or 24GB or don't worry about it.

@ Rapture...

His mobo uses triple channel RAM.

he doesnt need to utilize triple channel. he can just throw in the 1 for now. he's not doing anytthing intensive so it's not going to matter. He can worry about getting fully decked out when he moves to ddr4.
the 8 gig stick was meant to replace his 6.

i just cant see any reason in spending anything more than the bare minimum on ram for d3 and Cs go.

But the ssd is a must :)
