Is it worth it to spend an extra 100 on the cpu? Thinking the quad is a better choice so he's not left upgrading in the near future

Tbh, it's "worth it" to spend more like $1000 dollars on a new desktop.

No it isn't really worth it. The i3 performs very similarly to the i5 because of it's hyperthreading. in most cases, the i5 will not even out perform the i3 by a significant margin.

You'll clearly see that the i5 is better in some titles, at some points, but only marginally. IMO this is not worth the extra money, especially because if you had put 100 more into graphics, you would get more frames across more games on average anyway, than putting it in the CPU.

It's worth getting i5 and cheaper gpu that can max wow now, and spend on gpu later when he actually needs it.

I was talking to my buddy and he would spend the additional 100, so 700 budget to get the i5. That's what I was asking if it were worth it, get both good cpu and gpu

Where are you finding this 1060 @ 250?

That's a very overpriced 960...they're worth about 130 dollars, so that's all i would spend on one. (a 970/1060 or 390/470/480 are all close to 70% better, so it should be quite cheaper)

here's a revised version with your i5 and gpu. The 470, despite being a whole number lower than the 480, performs nearly identically.

edit: dont use pcpartpicker to get your graphics. it's not showing all the 470's availble
this is the cheapest i found on newegg:

This if you want 8gb version

Also, apologies about earlier i thought you were meaning to shift your budget around to include an i5.
