Great, heard it should be a nice aftermarket coolers.
Preferable under 75c max load. At that temperature you shouldn't cut much of the longevity off. none k with stock coolers usual is around that temperature as well.
I personally try keeping mine under 65c. Why i got a summer OC profile as well. Where i go from 4.8 to 4.5Ghz for those hot days.

High end thermal paste may give a few degrees improvement. I got 5c on a i7 4790k, H110i using Noctua NT-H1 vs the stock. so probably 2-8c depending on airflow, chip and cooler. You gotta decide if its worth getting thermal paste for another 8$.
Well you will have for at least for 15 applications with a regular 1.4ml. I've actually used some last saturday. My mate had some high temperatures on high sli 660ti's. Reaching 90c and started thermal throttling. I changed the paste on those. One of them had WAAAY to much thermal paste, the other one dry out. after replacement it got about 78c load.

Cool just ordered it. My case comes with some stock fans one on the back and one on the top and has room for 2 120 or 140mm fans in the front. I should probably pick those up when I get some spare money right, and replace the stock ones with a matching scheme/fan set

Sure if you enjoy a good looking PC.

BUT!
I would take the one from the top and move it to the front doing intake.
and ofc the rear one exhaust (i believe it already is)
At least equal or more intake than exhaust for a positive flow. Neutral airflow if you are hardcore.
in that sense 140mm intake and 120mm exhaust is pretty ideal.
The stock fans (FN V2) in the case are pretty decent. 1200RPM @ 21 dBA

Question, if I wanted to switch to a 1440P/144hz monitor such as https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2730Z-Monitor-Resolution-FreeSync/dp/B00TUK9D9K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1469643971&sr=8-2&keywords=1440p+144hz%2B+freesync do you think the 4gb 480 would be sufficient enough or would I need a whole new AMD GPU or crossfire 2 480s and still be able to get 60 fps

With a 144hz you'd want to aim for 144fps, Or you might as well just get a 1440p 60hz monitor for less $$$.

You'd want the 8gb version of the 480 at the very least.

1x RX 480 not enough for 1440p 144 fps gaming.
Its fine for 1440 at 50-60 fps.

Talking about games high-ultra.
Sure if you go down to low-med. But then the 1440p kinda lose meaning.

Surely 50-60 FPS can't be that bad, I thought human eyes can barely see above 60 unless I'm just really misinformed

Human eyes do not capture in frames per second.
But if you believe you are capable of telling the difference. You should really not waste your money on 144hz.

FPS = how many pictures per second the PC makes ready to be watchable.
Hz = Hertz how many times per second the monitor refreshes, where a picture can be shown.

Sync technologies like Vsync, Gsync, FreeSync and Async is made so FPS is getting lined up with monitor Hz

So while I've been waiting for this graphic card to come in stock/ship I've been thinking a little bit more about my build as far as being able to play games in the oncoming years reliably. Even at 1440p if I have to turn down some settings/work with lower FPS. Would it be smart/possible with my budget to drop the unlocked CPU and go with a i5 6500 locked and either go for the aftermarket 8gb 480 or the 1060. If you were in my shoes what do you think? Trying to squeeze out the best performance for this budget I can

Also considering to cut a little costs for more headroom on the GPU if I decided to go another route/allocate money somewhere else what would be the difference between the asus z170-e mobo you picked for me vs something like this https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-PC-MATE.html#hero-overview

Around 20 bucks or so cheaper not sure if it's any good or dropping ASUS(heard they are very good/reliable).

I'd have to be able to cut 50$ to make this build work unfortunately
