of course a external hdd is just as good. Maybe even better since it is portable xD
Wireless cards can connect your computer to a wireless network. So you dont need a ethernet cable. But i would still always use a cable if you have the option. But WLAN on desktop computer is commenly used in small form factor computers (mini-ITX)
Soundcards are already on your main board. But if you need a better one you have to buy an additonal one. This is not needed for gaming but if you buy 3000$ worth of speaker one day you might want to invest in one.

Well where my PC is, and the desktop will be, Ethernet isn't an option unless I drill holes and run long ass cables under the house. I run one sub with 2 small speakers so I don't think I meet the criteria for the sound card.

Wireless network cards are around 30$.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/b7kVrH - but starts getting above 1000$

If you dont want to overclock you can get a smaller computer, since they already have wifi and bluetooth on the main board. They look nice, and the bluetooth will keep kables to the bare minimum.

A tad over your budget, but well worth it if you don't want issues down the road....

Oh how the American dollar hurts my feelings. I think you'd be happy with either build. Liking the 1st myself.

Oh, you should post that you're from Canada, due to the horrible prices there. :(

I see that it's in your profile, but so many ppl don't have it in there profile, I've just quit looking.

New games are not optimized for "budget computer" ie 1000$ range -- you will need to spend 2k+ and get the absolute best hardware to run games on their full settings...
IMO the final product just does not justify the cost. Get decent+new stuff ( dont skimp, but dont go crazy either.)

edit: the above pc builds look very nice
