I'd just snag the Alienware, if you could get an M15x/M17x you could upgrade the GPUs.

No, don't get the alienware, the value of that used computer is easily under $250.
I built you a computer with brand new components and will kick that M14x's ass by miles for the same price.

Desktop=/=mobile

You can't even find a better laptop for $400.

If the OP can go the desktop route, ofc that would be the better option, no questions asked.

Not sure why you believe a 5y/o laptop will die soon, I have MANY older laptops and even a few legacy Alienware laptops.

EX: Here is an Alienware m17x from 2008 which pre-dates the Dell buyout and functions well today, even with most games.
