M8 your case is tiny. Don't tell me there won't be restrictions. I agree it is not as powerful, so i've one upped you to match price.
i've made a revised system with the case secksi brought to my attention. ^^

it also sports a 280, 3gb. Unfortunately it is 15 dollars over the budget,
but if he cannot fit an extra 15, then here is a slightly lower budget build

The case is a micro atx min tower, the board is a micro atx board, so as I said, no restrictions at all... (0% restrictions)
Do you understand that? The case will have 0 restrictions unless he plans on housing a lot of hard drives which is very unlikely.

Please get your facts straight.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GTnZsY
Total: $504.80
This is with a GTX 950 and no Mail-In Rebates or anything else.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GwGszy
Total: $523.79
This is if you don't mind going a little over budget and includes and R9 280 for a 23% on avg better gfx card that has 10% better value

Ohh I see your point now.

No sir i did not mean the build would be restricted now.
I meant down the line, for upgradeability. it would be possible that it could be too small for him if he ever wanted to get a larger motherboard, or an exceptionally large gpu.
But, i'm done discussing this here as I have said all I can say to help out the OP, please pm me if you want to discuss further. :)

edit: My builds:

Slightly over budget, moreso with rebates

Meet budget, with rebates

Ok, I'm done too, my last point is. A motherboard is the last thing that you would upgrade in your system.
Because you would need to upgrade a cpu as well, and potentially ram as well. If you are not changing your socket, then there is no point of changing the motherboard.
At the point of getting a new motherboard, might as well get a whole new system and maybe take the video card and ram if possible.
As for big cards the case supports up to 300mm cards so any card will fit in there even a Titan X.

Your Intel build
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nq9xnQ
Total: $538.73 (Without Mail-in Rebates)
Total: $518.73 (With $20 Mail-in Rebates)
VS
My Intel build
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GwGszy
Total: $518.88 (Without Mail-in Rebates)
Total: $491.29 (With $40 Mail-in Rebates)

-You are spending $55 more on a CPU that is overall only 8% better. The i3-6100 has a 26% better value then the i5-6400.
-You are removing the SSD to save $20. Honestly, I would rather have the SSD, but it's totally up to urbanski, and you can do the same with my build and save $20 and actually be under budget.
-You are going with the GTX950 instead of R9 280 and saving $30. The R9 380 is overall 43% better and has about 25% better value.
-Your case is good and costs $5 less, I would actually recommend that in my build.

Here is an updated list with Canadian_Born's case.

how about you stop picking and ripping apart other peoples builds? cause im sure there are a lot of people on here that would rip yours right down. the only thing you are good at is bad mouthing others builds thinking yours are top notch.. well guess what? i wouldnt buy one of your inferior builds. as for the vid card yes i skimped and opted for a cheaper one to keep closer to budget.. the 380 IS what i initially had in my PP list..

and i need to see this so called proof you speak of showing that an i3 is only 8% difference from an i5? link pls? otherwise shut up.. there is a dramatic difference between the architecture, speed, and overall performance of an i3 to an i5..

as for your $#!+ builds..

1. crucial has been avoided by most builders and techs for the past 3+ years as samsung has the best performance and durability when it comes to ssd's.. but you go ahead and reccomend crap products....
2. ONE stick of ram is not reccomended or advised from ANY builder that i know, or any builder i can think of that builds on here..
3. 9/10 of your builds have had compatability issues amoungst space in a case or products in general..

... soo just keep thinking you're king $#!+ there buddy.. ive never once ripped apart anyones builds until now.. and as much as you explain your crappy decision in parts etc. you ARE NOT valid 80% of the time in your choice.. you are obviously here bored because you got locked.. gl and hf with that..

A r9 280 for 158$ ?? I hardly believe so. Fr3nchi... You should start learning how to use tools like pcpartpicker. If an offer is to good to be true it is mostly sold out or a pricing error.

They were selling them when I posted it, I couldn't believe it either so I checked.

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it.
I've been thinking maybe about going the laptop route because i will not be doing heavy gaming. Maybe some brood war(nothing crazy). Just basically want it to be fast enough to stream movies and do some minor editing.(video)
Do you guys think it would be ok to get a nice laptop instead?
Or would just buying a tower be better?
