AM4 might be released this year, but Zen has been delayed until next year, and Zen+ is expected afterwards.

So we could expect a nice price drop in other things? Again don't need a benchmark machine. Just enough to game most games that are out and ones coming out in near future on med-high settings with good framerates.

If AMD can compete against Intel with Zen and so forth, we could possibly see competitive pricing from both manufacturers, but currently, Intel can sell its high priced CPUs because AMD cannot compete past a certain point.

It is a mismatch.

AMD = higher power requirements
Don't always go by clock speed as the deciding factor some games work just as well on a 3.2 GHz CPU as they would on a 3.6 GHz CPU.

Also, check this article out: http://techreport.com/news/28957/the-skylake-core-i3-6320-is-the-gamer-new-best-friend
That's a 2 core 4 thread CPU that has the best single core performance.
Another user showed me this article and I'm absolutely contemplating doing a build just to see if it works.

not only should clock rate not be a deciding factor.. it has nothing to do with anything

if you're comparing the same architecture, with the same cache size.. only then does clock matter

Zen is being released in 2016 with further improvements and Zen+ in 2017.

When I saw rumors of Zen being pushed to Q4 of this year, I assumed the worst, but it could be released this year; until AMD officially announces it, it is all speculation.

last I read was Q2 -3 for initial release. I guess they're starting with 1 CPU initially to see the reaction and results. Given their track record with Bulldozer and Piledriver I can't blame them.

Amd is still on track for this year
http://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/90458-amd-zen-based-opteron-chips-detailed-cern-slides/

With some of the beastier cpu's coming next year.

As for you OP,
Amd is inferior, but budget friendly! If you have a low budget, intel technically becomes inferior because your budget has less room for a more powerful graphics card, which will get you more performance where it matters.
There are other factors to consider, but give us your budget and we can tell you more ^_^

Its very simple:

If you can fit a 970 or a 290x in your budget and still room for intel, then intel, otherwise amd and 970 or 290x.
