i new about the x4 slot never did try run sli on this 1 just had a xtra card but i do agree with the 970 upgrade

it was something with my memory slot bein bad i think it was

and been 3 year on this mb so i think might be time for upgrade lol

my asrock z77 xtreme4 is getting close to 4 years old i think. i have zero reason to upgrade.

are you trying to use the dead ram slot on that mb?
if not, upgrade your graphics card

You dont have a bad slot. You simply lack a second x16 PCI slot. The other big PCI slot might look like a x16 but it is electricaly wired as a x4 slot. Since Nvidea requires its cards to be connected to at least a x8 slot to run in SLI your mainboard cant run SLI.

But i agree with Penguins0690. Sell both 660 and get a 390/970.

I never knew of the eight lane Nvidia SLI requirement. Does AMD have the same?

A PCI-E 2 x4 slot would probably be a noticeable bottleneck for a 660, too.

Here's the SLI confirmation:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-sli-faq,4079.html

Nvidia does not specifically state this:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/sli/system-requirements

"NVIDIA recommends a PCI-E 2.0 x16 motherboard for the best performance."
Recommending is not the same as requiring, so Nvidia should change that...

thats my current gaming, photo/vid editing, music composition, dj rig.. does everything i need it to do..

I had the M5A 97 R2.0 motherboard, and found the 8320/8350 bottlenecks on the chipset, under extreme rendering. since upgrading to the M5A 99FX Pro R2; I havnt had an issue.

as my build shows, I am running a 2 way sli, and havnt had an issue with it, however ive had a few friends with the same motherboard complain about issues in 2 way sli with other manufacturers primarily evga, (i am running dual MSI Geforce gtx 980ti's)

in my opinion the m5a 99fx pro r2 is the most solid motherboard for the 8320/8390 cpu's; however; some would probably disagree

you can look into the sabertooth, or rampage as well if you wanted to opt for older chipsets

Sabertooth 990FX uses the same chipset as you have. Crosshair V also uses the same one. What are you talking about?
