That video card price is insane to me.

Thoughts on the 390x vs the 980ti? The price difference is crazy.

running the games you listed an R9 390 does very well. There's really no need for a 390X or 980Ti especially at 1080p. I wouldn't invest heavily into a GPu with HBM coming into more focus this year.

The 390x doesn't seem too much more expensive and I'm not sure what other games I'll play in the future.

I do want to stick to 1080 for now but I think I'll go to 144hz

but be aware that 144hz means 140% more stress to CPU and GPU. The 390x will struggle with that. At high settings and 1080p it can only deliver around 80-100fps in most games.

I don't think the cost difference from 390 to 390x is worth it
either go 390 or 980 ti
other things don't make much sense unless you're talking about the "lower end" cards

980 ti if 1440
390 if 1080

The jump from 390 to 390x is like 80 dollars. The jump from 390 to 980 ti is like 300+.

The money isn't an issue if its worth the value. What is the reason for me to go from 390 to 980 ti?

Why i5 instead of i7?

I'm looking for this setup to last a long time.

If you're going to game at 1440p, get the 980ti, otherwise get the 390.

Alternatively, you can wait for Pascal/zen to come out from nvidia/amd (will be their new gpus) and just get a budget one for now and sell it on CL or something

I5 is used for games
Only 1 game I know uses hyperthreading (which is the diff between i5 and i7) and that's star citizen

itd be a hair over your $1500 limit.. but you could add an additional 8gb of ram and should run fine
