First of all there is no reason to go for the older haswell architecture anymore.
Second i highly doubt that your gtx 970 can get you 144fps with high quality settings. Also a baseclocked 3,6gh quadcore will struggle to feed the grafic card at 144fps. If you really want to push 144fps then you should go with an overclocked i7 6700k and a 980 or 980ti.
Otherwise just get a 60hz monitor and push for 60 fps.
If you push for 60fps the prozessor is oversized. Then a i5 6600 will do the job just as well.

Also there is no need to buy a Z97 chip set if you buy a non-k cpu. Also if you buy a non-k cpu you dont need any aftermarked cooler. Stock cooling is enough.

BUT: besides all these minor optimations the computer you picked will get you 60+fps at almost all current games at high settings.

use a 1TB HDD, Stock cooling, H97M chip set, slower RAM -> http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CTybBm

i7 4xxx. The 4 means it is a 4th generation prozessor called haswell. We are currently at the 6th generation called skylake. These prozessor are build differently, use different main boards and have different features. Since the 6th generation is not more expensive then older generations you should always buy the latest one.

You want to use a 144hz monitor right? That means you want to play at 144fps right? I am just saying that it will be hard for a computer in this price class to run at 144fps at decent frame rates. Both GPU und CPU will be pushed to the limit.

You choose a cpu without the "K" attribute. For example the i7 4790K. That K means that the clock speed is not locked and you can overclock the cpu. Hence your CPU can not be overclocked. Yet you still pay the premium for the main board with a Z97 chip set. This more expensive chip set is used for overclocking. If you have a non-K cpu the cheaper H97 is enough.

This is how you build could look if you want to go for skylake.

I did not tell you you have to get a different monitor. I was just pointing out that a 60hz monitor would be enough as you wont get much more then 60fps anyway.

For the games he listed, a GTX 970 is going to easily get over 144 FPS. It will get 80-85 FPS on ultra settings on most newer titles. He could always lower the settings if he wanted 144 Hz on newer games or he could just lower the refresh rate on the monitor to 90.

okay. yes you can get 144fps with a 970 but it simply does not make any sense. In order to reach this kind of frame rates you would have to disable all AA and AF resulting in an overall worse gaming experience.

Lol disabling aa and aa worst gaming experience
You know gameplay is far greater then gfx right

Btw many motherboard companies are allowing non k cpus to be overclocked with a bios update for now(until Intel decides to crack down)
