yeah in usd you could have got a 970m gpu in it for under $1200 is pretty common.

I am pretty sure more vendors will still honor the hardware warranty as long as the part that broke isn't a part that you installed. goes for ram/hdds. anything more than that would probably void the warranty though..
if you are really paranoid about that just keep the original hdd and if something happens to the laptop slap it back in?
