Not sure what you mean by that, but if you want a good card that fits your budget consider a 960, if you dont pay tax on amazon
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SK8PK9A/?tag=pcpapi-20
comes with free copy of phantom pain that you can keep or sell to someone.
or a 280
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150705&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
which comes with a free copy of dirt rally you can keep or sell. Also has a 25 dollar rebate which makes the price pretty sweet overall.
You can compare performance of a 280 and your current card here, i've selected a 7850 as the starter choice

the 960 and 280 are really similarly performing.
Would I need to upgrade my motherboard to handle the newer graphics cards?

No. As long as a motherboard has a spot for a reasonably modern graphics card such as a 7800, then it is compatible.
