Hmmmm talking to a friend he thinks I'll get bottlenecked hard with the 980ti and thinks I'd be better off replacing RAM, processor (will wait for Skylake although this is the first I'm hearing about it), and getting a 970. Thoughts?

/e Not trying to be a pain, just trying to figure out what's best and better understand the parts of my PC :D

lol no it won't be a hardcore bottle neck, especially if it's overclocked.
Maybe to new games that rely very heavily on the CPU.

you'd have to replace motherboard as well if you upgrade to skylake

Hmmmm okay! If you were in my position, what would you do? Looking to spend up to $800 on either a GTX 980 ti or on a 970 with other new components

just get a 970 imo

980/980 ti is overkill, nn that (and if you do get it, you might as well just rebuild your comp, which doesn't make sense with another architecture around the corner)
and i don't see a benefit of getting other parts besides what you already have as you won't see an improvement along with getting the 970

if you're willing to spend that much,
in ur position, i'd get hybrid 980ti or 970SLI like rapture said

then a year or so later, you can upgrade the rest like mobo, cpu, ram when there's a sick bundle or something
Most likely won't need to if you are just casually gaming on 1080p

Alright then I'm just going to go with the 970SLI for now and can always double up if need be but I doubt that will be necessary for a while. Thanks for the help!

Last question - does it matter if I get the Asus/Gigabyte/EVGA GPU? Is there any difference at all/preferred brand?

not by much,
evga has the best support but the "cheapest" look
asus/msi looks sexy/quiet fan doesnt run when not needed
gigabyte g1 is a huge beast but costly $$
