yup empty holes unless you bought more fans at some point. there is one on the front and thats it.

Sound card would make a difference but you'd need proper sound hardware to hear it really, such as expensive speakers or headphones.

Motherboards have built-in sound. If you need better sound quality (because of high end audio equipment) get a DAC and amp. Otherwise, on-board sound works fine.

in some cases it is true. when it is, its a very tiny difference [2-3%], not worth the money if that's all you are after.

Your budget allows for a GTX 970
I'd buy that over the r9 290
