x99 and DDR4 isn't necessary, but you would most likely benefit from the increased speed of DDR4.

If you want to run 4k (at 60 fps or higher) you're going to need at least 2 GTX 970's or R9 290x's. Two GTX 980's would be better though.

Would be the bare minimum I would say. Although, you would greatly benefit from 32GB of RAM and, as previously said, DDR4.

290x

GTX 970
Either of the above would be much better.

Keep in mind, the 290x Crossfire and 970 SLI will perform similar - depending on the game. Even with two of either card at 4k res you'll only be getting 25-45 DPS at all ultra settings (with FXAA enabled) depending on the game. Even the GTX 980 SLI will only give you 33-55ish fps on the same settings. The 290x Crossfire even competes with the GTX 980 on some games, but at the cost of nearly double the power draw and more heat generated.

Both links have a filter on the cases. Just pick one you like.

Thanks a ton for all of this man, it's much appreciated .. One last thing: I'd rather put money into fixing up that RAM before I spend more on graphics. What specifically would you suggest? I'm hoping to purchase all of this today.
I think I'm going to run a single graphics card for now (the next month or two, probably) since I don't even have a 4K monitor or TV yet .. and because this computer is getting expensive.
With that in mind, would you go for a single GTX 970 or R9 290X? Obviously with the intent of throwing in a second GPU in a few weeks/months time and eventually doing 4K gaming.

For this:

You need an Intel CPU, 2x 970's or 980's and I would guess 32GB of RAM, (speed doesn't matter that much).

I would just get this... http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/nmFhTW you don't have to buy both vid cards now. But you will want two eventually, and for SLI the cards must match (same make and model, more or less)...so it would be smart just to get both at the same time.
The SSD will run those programs faster, the amount of RAM is pretty much necessary for running those program at the same time. I picked a 2TB HDD for storage purposes, and you can add a 2nd one of those later on.

Anyways that's what I would get for the programs you want to run. It's NOT the bare minimum, but it isn't much past the bare minimum. I think you will be happy with this build.

aaaand thank you as well!
I definitely won't be able to buy both of the cards at the same time, because I only have so much money allotted for building a computer right now. This setup is beautiful

Word. I'll probably grab the 970 then ... and nah man, I was gonna buy the monitor when I bought this. But I don't think my savings account is going to be too stoked about me doing that .. so I'm gonna hold off for now.

Thanks for all the help brahs

Yeah .. Figures. It's probably best to wait a little while. Plus the price drop should be pretty substantial in some months time

Just went out and bought this setup: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/QcQvYJ
Are there any red flags regarding certain models/parts that I should be aware of before I build this?

Whats your main OS? I know you're running VM's, but whats the main platform? Also, what version?

Looks good, be advised though, even in the future, that mobo can ONLY support 32GB of RAM. Also you'll need to run the Pro or higher version of Windows 7 (if using Win 7), to SEE all 32GB.

/e Also that RAM is 1.65v RAM not really acceptable for your CPU....IF it gives you problems switch it for this: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f32133c11q32gzl

It might be OK and has been tested by GSkill to work on your motherboard. But like I said the CPU may not like it, due to the voltage.
